Using a DC to AC Power Inverter with DJ Equipment
I wanted to know if I could power my DJ equipment set with a DC to AC power converters. Would I need to hook it up to a car battery or is there a way I can charge batteries during a live set or would have to have it hooked to multiple batteries?
You can use a dc to ac power inverter to conduct your DJ equipment sets, I would probably recommend a pure sine wave dc to ac power inverter. When using complex audio equipment you would want to limit the harmonic distortion as much as possible. As for the size of the Power Inverter that would really depend on the exact equipment you are trying to operate. You can make a list of all the different pieces of equipment and we can review the exact power draw required. If you would like to figure it out yourself you can check all the power rating stickers on the back of your devices and then add about 20% to their totals and select the inverter accordingly.
As for charging the batteries while using the mobile power system. If you have the dc to ac power inverter connected to your vehicle battery and the engine is running then the alternator will be charging the battery during use. This might be a little costly because you will be wasting gasoline. Another option would be to connect several batteries in parallel that will supply you with enough DC power to complete your full set. Then you can charge your battery bank with a standard battery charger when you have AC power or utility power available. You can test your equipment with one or two batteries to establish the operating time per battery and then setup the required batteries to have sufficient battery power. Also keep in mind that your DJ set can run longer then sometimes expected so make sure you have more then enough battery power to handle the work load. If you are planning on running the DC to AC Power inverter off of the vehicle battery you need to remember that every alternator charges the batteries at a different rate. Therefore if the load applied to the inverter is high then it is very possible that the alternator will not be able to keep the battery charged. You can always increase the strength of the alternator if you choose to go with that method of charging.
