Tailgating with a DC to AC Power Inverter
Hi, I live in Chicago and I am looking for a DC to AC Power Inverter to use in my pickup truck when I go tailgating before Bears games. I would like to run my sandwich press and microwave. They are both listed at 13.5 amps, can you please advise which inverter we should get? Thanks
If you are looking to use a DC to AC Power Inverter in this application you would probably be looking at 3000 watt 12 volt dc to 120 volt ac unit. This 3000 watts you will be able to operate up to 25 amps of power and can definitely hand your microwave oven and sandwich press. As for the installation I recommend trying to keep the inverter within three feet of the direct current (your truck battery). You can then use an extension cord from the AC outlets to run to your cooking area. If you choose to install the inverter into the flat bed you might experience some power loss due to less secure connection to the batteries. If this is the installation route you chose it would be best to double the cable size and make sure your screw the cables as tight as possible to the terminal rings. When using a DC to AC power inverter the alternating current will not be affected by the length of the connection on the front outlets of the unit. Therefore if you decide to connect a 100 foot extension cord with a short proper DC connection then full 3000 watt or 25 amps should remain available to you. Usually you will lose about 5% to 10% efficiency of the power inverter per three feet from the batteries with proper cabling.
